Have you ever had a conversation with someone and realised you haven’t a clue what they said? Or watched a programme and got to the end and realised you have no idea what happened? That’s often because you’ve been distracted by the thoughts in your mind. You haven’t been present. When you’re worrying you tend to be in the 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 thinking about all the ‘what ifs’. Or sometimes we ruminate on the 𝐩𝐚𝐬𝐭 thinking about all the difficult experiences we’ve been through. Where you are in your mind often dictates your mood. I’m sure we can all reflect on a past experience that has made you angry and notice that same anger returning? Our thoughts are so powerful and we can improve our mood & wellbeing by practising mindfulness & being present. When you notice a change in your mood, stop use this arrow and think about where you actually are in your mind. If you notice you’re in the past or future. Pull yourself back to the present. Take notice of your senses. Focus on what sensations they’re receiving. What can you see? What can you smell? Touch? Taste? Mindfulness is difficult to practise initially- but the benefits are endless. Your body is present. Is your mind? Tell me...have you practised mindfulness before?

Tackling anxiety can be tough to do but there are some things you can try yourself to avoid the cycle: 🔹 Do you engage in safety seeking behaviours (SSB )? These are behaviours which reduce your anxiety in the short term but can be disruptive to your life and increase your anxiety in the long term. An example is Avoidance, if you feel anxious about meeting new people you may avoid these situations and make reasons not to go. It is a good idea to notice these behaviours and challenge yourself to stop engaging in them. I recommend checking @owenokaneten out for more info on this, he has some great videos explaining SSB and anxiety. 🔹Challenge your Automatic Negative Thoughts (ANTs ). These are thoughts that automatically arise in response to an event or situation, for example ‘What if everyone laughs at me?’ Or ‘I will make a mistake.’ Try to challenge these thoughts by considering ‘What is a more helpful thought/possibility?’ ‘What is the worst that could happen?’ ‘What is the best outcome?’ Beginning to recognise your SSBs and ANTs is a good first step in helping to manage and tackle your anxiety 🌚🌝 Parents can help children to identify the SSBs and ANTs and support them to make small changes to these patterns.

The Two Sides of Swimming (& my mood! ) I really didn’t want to swim in the lake yesterday & after a physio session, my poorly knee wasn’t feeling up to it either - but Hubby drove & I did it - just 1 lap. I also got back in - “bobbed” up & down to come to terms with what’s under the water... Versus this morning (& with my new swimsuit on ) I hit the pool - achieving 2050m of my 2250m target today (I ran out of time as only get 50mins in the pool & I was late, thanks to temporary traffic lights! 🤦♀️ ) This mornings swim felt amazing, I felt super speedy (new swimsuit obvs! ) & confident, versus yesterday when I was afraid, slow & just wanted to quit. I’m still learning how to manage lows & appreciate highs better. MY MENTAL HEALTH JOURNEY 🐝 ✨ Next week is my final week of CBT Therapy. I have learnt so much which has really helped with managing all my “issues”. I plan to continue to self help and to self educate as I’ve loved the progress! Back in December last year I realised I really needed some help. I went to the Doctors and was diagnosed with “Severe PTSD, Depression from Trauma and Anxiety” which was not an easy pill to swallow. I decided to put myself out there and ask for help, upon asking I was met with 9 month waiting lists or private options costing a fortune. At this point I could literally feel myself slipping away, I had been giving this diagnosis but with no way of coping with it. But I didn’t give up. Come March of this year I found Cruse, they were so helpful were ready to help from the get go. They specialise in Bereavement Therapy but I was made to feel safe talking about anything that was bothering me. During that course of therapy I had real moments of realisation of how I was not coping and helped me not only to face the issue at hand but also how to just be. I then was able to complete a CBT course which has been truly amazing. It helps you notice symptoms and gives you exercises which you can at any point to help yourself! I cannot begin to describe the feeling of deep relaxation you get from having a reflexology session. It's amazing to see the difference in my clients faces and posture and energy from when they walk in to when they walk out. Reflexology works on such a deep level - relaxing the body physiologically through the nervous system, calming & balancing the stress hormones. But it also brings a deep connection back into our body - we're all so busy and in our heads that we are often disconnected from our bodies. That hour treatment - of simply "being" in your body - reconnecting with your self, seeing the ease & balance return is beautiful to witness as therapist. This takes practice since we are used to this thinking patterns as our age. We step on the road everyday and the road had been firmer than a concrete. A little bit about me: I LOVE music! Many genres, but I’ll always have a soft spot for 1990’s R&B. If you can relate, I’m sure you recognize this lyric from Lauryn Hill’s song “Doo Wop”. Such a good song! I’m not sure why this song was stuck in my head today. But this line reminded me of the importance of prioritizing what is “within” — our heart, spirit, and mind. So often we get caught up in the rat race, trying to “win” and achieve success on the outside. We work so hard for more money, more prestige, even more social media likes, hoping those things will bring us joy and peace. I’m learning that none of those external things are sufficient to bring us lasting happiness or wellbeing. There are countless examples of celebrities who have every external win imaginable, and still find themselves feeling miserable and hopeless before ending their own lives. And there are many everyday people who appear to be functioning well, achieving a lot, and still suffering inside. Instead of focusing on the outward wins, we can find true wellbeing when we prioritize taking excellent care of our heart, spirit, and mind. Being healthy, happy, and whole — that’s the real win. ❤️

What is Fragmentation? Fragmentation occurs when a trauma- no matter what degree it is felt- happens to an individual. The Soul and the Self splits itself: the aspect of the Protector & the aspect of the one that needs Protecting is born. The aspect of Self that identifies with who it needs to be in order to survive is born. And also, the aspect of Self that is still authentic is present as well. There are no limits to how much a Soul or Self can Fragment. It really depends on the Individual and the Trauma experienced. And what is Trauma? It is distress without resolve. Why this is important for you to realize, is that through Alternative Healing, through CBT & Shamanic Reiki, I help facilitate your journey back to a state of Oneness. Where the Innocent Self (the aspect of you that was present before Trauma ) and the Wise Self (the aspect of you that is born through learning lessons from Trauma ), MERGE. The Merging of the Eternal Self is where the first round of Enlightenment begins. The second round of Enlightenment is to help OTHERS through their healing process as you have and are continuing yours. With my practice of CBT & Shamanic Reiki, I am not only pulling Healing Energy from my own experience, but I’m tapping into the potential of YOUR Healing Abilities so that you can help YOU- I am merely the conduit and facilitator of that Journey. So in short, we have all Fragmented. And the Selves that we hold within can be from just a few to countless Selves. One of my favourite books that I've read recently is "The Power of Now" by @eckharttolle . The idea that we are not our thoughts is a profound, game-changing shift in perspective and understanding. We all, every single one of us, have thoughts that are negative, pessimistic, unfounded, or straight-up wrong. That's OK! The problem is when we take these thoughts at face value and assume their validity. ⠀ The whole premise of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT ), the most widely therapeutic model, is on addressing these problematic thoughts. Identifying, challenging/stopping, then shifting and incorporating thoughts that are more intentional, grounding, and useful is a way that we can take control over our thoughts, which has a huge impact on our emotional experience. ⠀ It's hard work, but knowing that you have control over the direction of our thoughts is a powerful place to start from. This chart is a useful tool to start identifying the ways in which our negative thoughts can manifest and cause chaos. Learn to identify, stand-up, and challenge them.

If you’ve been following me for a while, you know that I am an advocate of cognitive behavioral therapy...not that it’s the best type of treatment for everyone, but when it comes to healing anxiety...it has been a saving grace for me (Along with other mindfulness based and holistic treatments )... 〰️ One of the most common components of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT ) is being able to identify an Automatic Negative Thought (ANT ). 〰️ These are thoughts that just enter your mind automatically...as automatic as blinking! 〰️ For those of us that struggle with anxiety, logic is overruled by the BELIEF that something bad will 1000% happen...even if there is it highly improbable. 〰️ The longer these patterns continue, the more likely they are to become ingrained, lifelong habits. 〰️ One way to start healing is by becoming more self-aware and acknowledging that the thought pattern is not accurate...basically, you are successfully telling your anxiety that you know it's creating this altered view of reality. 〰️ Overcome these loud anxious thoughts by stopping the ANTs in their tracks! When THE HIM and I first married, for a few years, we’d look at each other and think, “Da hail! What is going on here?” He’d call me fake. Then, he met the fullness of my family and he said, “Your extra comes in multiples. There are more like you!” I told him he was ghetto, had no manners and needed to quit living like he was still on the street corner. He didn’t understand my Southern etiquette standards. I’d tell him, “I’ll never be Le’ShaBAMqueisha, but I am surely BAM! 💥💥 It was a mess! I clutched my pearls and grabbed my “Black Love” heart a lot! He’d look at me and shake his head. When I reflected, I could see how his “street code” energy matched the country girl in me ready to axe somebody up. I can reverse into, “I wish a ninja would” status, in a NY minute, while wearing heels with a matching purse! I keep a blade in my designer bag. His love for his all rings of the community lined up with my desire for servicing the community. His masculine nature to protect me at any and all costs appealed to the Muslim Southern Belle in me. The time in his childhood spent with his traveling gospel singing mother coordinated with my years in the Holiness church. I didn’t have to explain myself, when I raised my hand like my Momma, one of the Mothers of the Church, and said, “Alhamdulilah.” He got it! His mother did it too. We were a match. But not the way I envisioned it. Allah put this together. We’re grateful for His wisdom. When looking at your spouse, or for a spouse, think beyond the comfortable packaging that makes you feel safe. Your needs may be met outside of your comfort zone.

Due to COVID I have been more ‘stuck’ in the city that I live in. Luckily, it is the beautiful city of Amsterdam. I moved here about 8 years ago and it was one of the best decisions I have made. Today marks one week in the new space. 🥳 I’ve reflected a lot this week about where I started, where I am, and where I’m going as a therapist and business owner. What I know is that I’m so thankful to have a peaceful place where clients can walk in and let down their worries and fears in exchange for safety, acceptance, and compassion. A lot of stories will be told in this space, and I’m just grateful to be here holding these sacred moments with the amazing clients I’m privileged to work with.
✨Are you always busy? We live in a society that praises hard work and productivity, so being busy all the time can make you feel as though you are winning in life. Trying to be at our best all the time creates a feeling of importance and can become addictive, but it can also be the cause of emotional exhaustion, numbness, and deep sadness. ✨We often distract ourselves with busyness to avoid some really hard feelings that come up in those still moments- shame, guilt, anger, loneliness. 🌈What are you busy avoiding? ✨When you notice you aren't busy and feel worried, know that filling your schedule up will only put off the inevitable. Anxiety is more than panic attacks and constant worrying. It is constant mind racing, obsessing over the future, trying to control every aspect of your life. It’s something that has become so debilitating to me in recent months, that I have been actively working on. When I got into a serious car accident on Saturday night, I immediately reverted to my old habits, my old thoughts. I took the victim stance, and tried to say, “why me, why did this happen, of course this happens to me, only bad things happen to me”. Instead, I sat there and thought for a second, “why did this happen to me”, and I thought about it, and realized, this could have been something that I needed. By no means do I mean a car accident is what I needed, but more so a situation that caused extreme stress and anxiety for me to truly see the work I have been doing pay off. I allowed myself to think my usual way, and then I challenged myself, and allowed myself to realize, this was my anxiety speaking. My anxiety was fueling my inner child, my inner worry. I was thinking this way because I didn’t have control, I didn’t know the next step, so couldn’t have the answers I wanted, right then and there. I was allowing myself to continue to think this way because my anxiety thrives in these situations. I stopped myself and checked the facts. I was safe, others were safe. I was able to go home that night, with minor scrapes and bruises and pain. My car was completely wrecked, and, that can be replaced. I slowly allowed myself to try to retrain my brain and say those things over and over again, and remind myself that, I can’t control everything, and everything will work out, when it needs to. I realized, nothing happens to anyone that they can’t handle. You can handle anything that is thrown at you, if you respond in a way that is kind to yourself. I can handle these stressful situations, and other situations that arise. I’m capable of stopping, checking the facts, challenging myself, and realizing that my anxiety does not define me. My anxiety, is simply just my anxiety, not who I am.

We can VISIT it but our home is in the PRESENT! We need to learn to live in the HERE & NOW. It’s the only thing we really have! • Ignore the haters....there will always be plenty of them. Don’t let them distract you from the work that’s needs to be done! Trust me... I have had and continue to have plenty of those! Don’t give them your energy via your thoughts and feelings. They are not worthy! • Surround yourself with people who see your potential and support your goals. They are there! We sometimes have to look and listen a little bit better to find them!
